Issue 2: Summer Programme

Did you know that students with dyslexia can apply for the Summer Programme? According to DCE founder Catherine Mulvihill, around 80% of parents and teachers are unaware that children with dyslexia may be eligible for this vital support.

The Summer Programme provides educational support for children with additional educational needs, yet thousands of dyslexic students miss out every year simply because families and schools do not realise they can apply.

With applications closing on Friday, May 15th, there is only a very short window for parents to apply for a child’s place on the Summer Programme, as applications only open for a one-week period.

At DCE, we are committed to raising standards in dyslexia education and ensuring that every parent and teacher understands the supports available to children with dyslexia. That is why Catherine will be speaking in depth about the Summer Programme during our free live webinar on Monday, May 11th, 7:00 pm (GMT+1).

Applications for the Summer Programme are only open for a limited period, so parents should contact their child’s principal or class teacher immediately to discuss eligibility and the best course of action for their child.

Importantly, the Summer Programme is not only for children with a formal diagnosis of dyslexia. Children who are accessing support through the Continuum of Support may also be eligible, even if they have not received a diagnosis.

Every school should be making parents aware of this opportunity. The Summer Programme was designed by the Department of Education to provide additional support for children who need it most, and every eligible child should have the chance to benefit from it.

While the system is far from perfect, the Summer Programme can provide valuable support that many dyslexic students may not otherwise receive during the school year.

For now, it remains one of the most important educational supports available to dyslexic students in Ireland. That is why we are encouraging every parent whose child receives additional support in school to speak to their school immediately about applying before the May 15th deadline.

At DCE, we are committed to helping parents and teachers understand every available support that can improve learning outcomes for dyslexic students.

For more information on the Summer Programme, join our free live webinar on Monday, May 11th, 7:00 pm (GMT+1).

Issue 5: The Dyslexia Support Gap Nobody Is Talking About: What Happens When Teachers Need More Support Too?
A child with dyslexia can spend years being told they need more support.   What if the people trying hardest to help them need more support too?   Our founder, CEO and researcher, Catherine Mulvihill, explored a question that remains highly relevant today: Are teachers being adequately prepared to support students with dyslexia in mainstream classrooms?   As part of her Master's in Applied Ling...
Issue 4: This is why I built DCE Dyslexia
DCE Dyslexia was founded with one clear goal: to help every individual learn to read. But dyslexia goes far beyond reading alone. It affects confidence, communication, learning, and how people experience the world around them. After working in mainstream primary schools across a variety of settings - urban, rural, DEIS 1, and more affluent schools - I began specialising in dyslexia in 2018. I ...
